KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 11, 2016) – Tonight’s second evening of qualifying activities for the Knoxville Nationals included Dave Blaney and the Motter Equipment Mohawk Northeast Beltline Body Shop Sprint Car team. With a cumulative 107 cars vying for 24 starting spots in Saturday’s most prestigious Sprint Car race, competitors in both nights accumulated points in a multifaceted system.
Only the top 50 qualifiers each night made the heats. The remaining drivers were put in the last chance heats.
Blaney piloted the signature yellow 71M to the No. 17 qualifying position (15.729 seconds) in tonight’s field of 60 competitors.
The Buckeye Bullet pushed off fifth in his heat and despite some scrappy driving, he finished fifth, just one position out of the top four transfer spots to the A Main. Blaney’s path to the A Main would have to be through the B, which was chock full of A-list drivers and tallied 24 starters.
The top four finishers in the 12-lap B Main transferred to tonight’s A feature.
Blaney started in the middle of the field, pushing off 11th and was never able to push through the pack to challenge for one of the top positions. Blaney finished 13th, joining a host of marquee drivers that did not advance to the A Main.
Blaney will have another opportunity tomorrow night to qualify for Saturday’s prestigious event.
